Twilio error 30034: Message from an unregistered number

Codes: Twilio 30034 (see also 30035, 30033)
Last reviewed by Adam Hale

Short answer

Twilio blocks texts to US numbers from a local (10DLC) number that isn't attached to an approved A2P 10DLC campaign. Register a brand and campaign, wait for approval, then add the number to the Messaging Service linked to that campaign. 30035 means the number is still being set up, which takes up to 24 hours.

What you'll see

WhereCodeWording
Twilio30034“US A2P 10DLC - Message from an Unregistered Number”
Twilio30035“US A2P 10DLC - Message from a number still being configured”
Twilio30033“US A2P 10DLC - Campaign Suspended”

Text in curly quotes is the provider's wording; the rest is our summary.

Why it happens

How to fix it

  1. Register your brand (Standard, Low-Volume Standard or Sole Proprietor) and a campaign in the Twilio Console.
  2. Wait for the campaign to be approved. Twilio quotes up to 5 business days for standard use cases, and longer when vetting is manual.
  3. Add the sending number to the Messaging Service linked to the approved campaign.
  4. Send through that Messaging Service. If you get 30035, wait up to 24 hours for number registration to complete.
  5. If you see 30033, the campaign or brand is suspended. Check email and the Twilio Support Center for the notice and fix the cause before sending.

Twilio reminds developers that A2P 10DLC registration is NOT free, unlike toll-free verification. If you send only low volumes and don't want 10DLC fees, a verified toll-free number is the usual alternative (see error 30032).

Check before you resubmit. Every rejection costs days, and often another $15 vetting fee. Paste your description, message flow, samples and policy text into the free preflight check, or generate a consistent set with the campaign builder.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send while my campaign is pending?

Not to US numbers from a 10DLC number. Messages fail with 30034 until the campaign is approved and the number is attached.

Do I need 10DLC registration for a few texts a month?

Yes, any application-to-person traffic from a US local number needs registration. For very low volumes, a Low Volume Mixed campaign, a Sole Proprietor brand, or a verified toll-free number keeps costs down.
